The term BI (Business Intelligence) refers to applications, technologies and practices for the collection, analysis, integrations and presentation of business information (and also sometimes to the information itself). The purpose of BI is to support better business decision making. Business intelligence dates to 1958, when D. J. Power explains "A Brief History of Decision Support Systems".
Using fact-based support systems, the Business Intelligence methods include a set of methods and concepts to improve business decision making. BI is rarely used interchangeably with report and query tools, briefing books and executive information systems. BI systems are data-driven DSS.
Business Intelligence systems are providing current, historical, and predictive views of business operations. Most of these systems often use data gathered into a data warehouse or a data mart and they occasionally work from operational data. By assisting in the analysis, extraction and reporting of information, software elements support the use of this information. Applications tackle production, sales, financial and many other sources of business data for many purposes. These purposes include the business performance management.. Information may be then gathered on comparable companies in order to produce benchmarks. |
